"Quaking" & Second Life

Why did I say that I was "quaking with excitement"? Made me sound like a bit of a numpty, but I really was (quaking that is, not being a numpty), and I know that I'm not the only one out there, getting excited about blogging, podcasts, Second Life, YouTube, MySpace etc. So in the vein of true transparency I had to speak with passion at the Delivering the New PR conference about what is giving me a buzz at the moment.

Indigo Red (of whom I am a Director and co-founder) were headline Sponsors because we believe that investing, in spreading the word about the tech possibilities that we have at our fingertips, is essential and needs to happen pretty sharpish.

I am in agreement that it comes as a compliment to the tools that PR practitioners already have at their finger tips, but it cannot be ignored, it is changing the consumer landscape and we must respond (that's you as PR pros and us as the headhunters and networkers)

So what's Second Life all about?

Virtual identities, virtual land, virtual relationships. Transparency, in terms of real identity or name is definitely not there as within the blogosphere... why is that? What is with the commercial interest, and money changing hands?

It was good to hear about CyWorld coming from South Korea, but also a bit freaky that apparently you need to provide blood tests to authenticate identity...

It is a huge form of escapism, which is worrying to me, it reminds me of the role play games that came out in the eighties. I want to get involved in a transparent way, but how and why?

Plenty to chew through.

What are your thoughts, do you have involvement, and how can Second Life be woven into PR offerings and should it be?

The conference was great to be at, and I am fired up anew, Second Life here I come. Apparently there's a visitors island that I will land on and be stuck on for a month or so trying to work out how to birth, walk & talk my virtual me, years quicker than the real human alternative!

Hi there. Just totally accidently noticed you had put a link to my blog in your blog roll. Thanks! Makes me curious though: have we met before? (not intended as the cliché pick-up line, mind you! :-D )

Thanks for commenting and linking to me, it was starting to become ridiculous how many times people mentioned "quaking" during the conference. I'm glad that I had an impact, and I hope that the conference had an equally great impact on the delegates, as it did to me in the Spring. I was buzzed up about Second Life, and have created a character 'Lydia Isabella', maybe we could connect there sometime? Steve my husband visited yesterday as 'Steve Primrose' and within an hour had connected with someone who knew an individual looking to move roles within PR (it is a very small virtual world!) So I was right to say that where the client, consumer & customer is, that's where we have to go, these places cannot be ignored, they should be embraced with gusto.
